This family had moved to the outskirts of town a decade ago to a quieter more spacious lifestyle. They had an old water feature with a bridge out to a deteriorating deck that was no longer serving their needs. They wanted a pool and a living space where they could cook, eat, play and relax.

outdoor living space design

visualizing with 3d rendering

For this extensive outdoor living space design build project, we created a full 3D rendering based on our client’s needs and expectations. By doing so, we were able to visualize the completed project, providing full clarity and transparency on the color, structure, material, and plantations. This ensures the newly constructed pool is complemented by all necessary amenities and maintains a consistent and harmonious aesthetics.

Our Design Approach

Step 1) Layout Pool & Patio Spaces: Form Follows Function

We analyzed the different options for the layout of the pool and decided to place it long ways out away from the house. This helped to center it on the house and extend the view out across the countryside view. This orientation also worked for the pool’s sun ledge to be closer to the house, and for the patio to step down to the fire pit area behind the pool.

Step 2) Choose the Materials

After the layout was decided and the function of each space determined we then moved to selecting materials. First we chose the pool plaster, tile, and coping. Then we selected the retaining wall materials, pavers, and flagstone to tie in with the pool. A waterfall was added during this process to provide the sound of water and a fun feature for the family to sit on, play in, and enjoy.

Step 3) crafting out the Details: Planting design

No outdoor living or pool project is complete without a beautiful landscape to surround and soften the space. We incorporated several tall prairie grasses with some colorful flowering shrubs like crape myrtle, drift roses, ninebark, and rose of Sharon. We also incorporated river rock in the drainage areas and a stepping stone path to connect the existing hot tub area to the pool patio.

Finally we finished off the planting plan with pockets of hardy perennial flowers. These included catmint, black-eyed susan, coneflowers, shasta daisy, and dianthus. Lastly we mulched in the new beds with black mulch to make the colorful planting pop in contrast.
