In 2017, a young couple had purchased a new home in Leawood near St. Line Road and decided to undergo a complete remodel of the entire home before moving in. They gutted the interior down to the studs and started over with everything new. On the exterior they had an ancient deck that was rotting and unsafe as well as overgrown unkept landscaping around the perimeter of the home and some drainage issues on the backside of a steep hill at the corner of their home where a 100 year old tree stood anchoring the foundation. It was clear that they had to rip out and replace the deck and landscape as well.

During a comprehensive home remodeling project, I wanted to completely replace the deck as part of the endeavor. My vision was to double the deck’s size, render it entirely maintenance-free, ensure its waterproofing beneath and add a hidden outdoor storage area. Additionally, I desired a similar aesthetic both above and below the structure that flowed with the both the house and surrounding landscaping. Royal Creations took the vision, ran with it, and executed it flawlessly. Not only did they bring my vision to fruition, but they meticulously managed every aspect of the project, including design, electrical work, construction, and collaborating with a engineer to ensure the deck’s structural integrity and compliance with all applicable codes. Our Design Approach
Step 1) Construction Method
We analyzed the different options for decking that would withstand the large dogs foot traffic. The client spoke with a concrete company about a suspended slab which seemed to be cost prohibitive. Our team decided to use a silica grate structural system to support the load of concrete pavers on top.
Step 2) Materials
Once we had decided on pavers we needed to get into the details of which paver would work best. We landed on a classic Holland Stone for it’s simplistic style and grey with black trim colors that blended with the houses theme. The Holland Premier also came with a strong face mix concrete top layer that would hold up even better to the dogs.
Step 3) Design & Construction Documentation
The project was produced with the help of a structural engineer to help verify the load calculations and submit to the city drawings for permit approval.
