deer creek cove
This retired family wanted to create a backyard oasis with a pool so the grandkids could come swim and play during the summer.
Have a similar project in mind?
In 2015, this family reached out to help design a backyard pool space with a walkout from their existing basement. They were working with a contractor on a basement remodel and we helped design a solution to dig down to create the walk-out and re-use most of the soil on site for landscape privacy berms. The Mrs. also wanted a ramp to wheel her potted plants between the different levels of space so she could bring them inside in the colder months.
We created a 4 level entertainment area with smaller rooms inside of the overall outdoor space. There was a lower walk-out, a mid level pool area, a raised patio seating area with pergola for shade and a deck off the main level of the house.
the challenges
Multiple levels, grade changes with ramp
Balancing Cut & Fill
Draining the lower patio outside the fence without a pump
Privacy from nearby walking path
Safety of Grandkids (automatic pool cover)
Lots of Rocks Underground

Our Design Approach
Step 1) Create Layout of Levels and Circulation Routes
We analyzed the different elevations of the project to design a curved ramp between the 2 lowest levels, and then we worked our way up the natural slope of the yard from there. We decided on 4 levels with each its own identity and function to make the most sense. From there we designed a planting plan that allowed us to mound up the earth and re-use most of the excavated soil.
Step 2) Choose the Materials
Once we had decided on the layout we then discussed materials and decided for this project concrete would work the best for both the budget and function of so many levels and sloped ramps. We also decided to add an integral color to the concrete to help it blend in with the segmented retaining wall block that we had chosen. This gave us the foundation of the design and circulation of the project.
Step 3) Design the Details
The next step was to design the details of the planting plan incorporating green giant evergreens for screening the street and fine line buckthorns to block the walking path near the fence. We also incorporated some flowering trees including cherry, magnolia, and redbud. Then we filled in with various shrubs and groundcovers to add mass and color. Finally we finished it off with a mix of perennial plants and grasses to soften the space and add color. We also incorporated a fountain focal feature at the end of the pool near the ramp to add interest. And then incorporated a detailed lighting plan to make the space useable at night for the family.
