Spa Living at Home

This active family had moved to a new neighborhood.  After having Royal Creations enhance the curb appeal of their previous home, they now needed help with a new backyard that would provide the outdoor living experience that they deserved.

We met at the new home to discuss a larger deck and patio space with a hot tub and television.  After a brief discussion we realized that setting the spa below the deck and underground would be the best option for them to create a private space to relax and entertain.  We included a screening wall with mounted television, as well as a bar sitting space and a fire pit lounge area.  We expanded the deck to be more usable off the upstairs kitchen and added heaters below the deck to make it more comfortable in the Spring and Fall seasons.

Royal Creations recently completed a major overhaul project on our entire yard. The design was beautiful and executed exactly as planned. Andy and his team were easy to work with. They were hard working, considerate, and paid great attention to every detail. We were extremely pleased with the process and project from start to finish.

Our Design Approach

Step 1) Select Spa Location and Layout of Deck and Patio

We analyzed the different elevations of the project to design a multi tiered patio space that would step up to help sink the hot tub below grade. This also created a wonderful opportunity for bar seating that also enclosed the spa space and added privacy. We also stepped down the patio space to allow for a more intimate fire pit gathering area.

Step 2) Choose the Materials

Once we had decided on the layout we then discussed materials and decided for this project. The homeowner loved the look of the French pattern silver travertine, so we chose that for the patio floor. We also knew that the house was going to be painted a subtle off white color, so we used some contrasting composite materials for the decks’ floor and vertical elements to make it stand out.

Step 3) Design the Details

The project included retaining walls and steps between each of the levels. We had to choose a retaining wall block that would work well for this and include proper drainage and geo-grid reinforcement to help stabilize this hardscape.

Step 4) Construction

Once all of the details were decided we had to put the plan into action. The most challenging part was the extra digging to create the hole for the hot tub to sit down under the patio. We had to build a vault with a drain and haul of a dozen loads of soil to make this work. Once we got the hole dug it was time to build.
