Stone Sanctuary

This room addition project was designed by a local architect and we helped to construct the stone work and outdoor living spaces.

In 2014, we were contacted to collaborate with the construction team on this massive addition to the home with tons of outdoor living space. There were some tapered stone columns supporting the structure as well as paver and flagstone flooring.

the challenges

Winter time construction with masonry materials

Drainage of sunken spaces

Had to complete a half-started project

Coordination with multiple contractors

Our Design Approach

Step 1) Pick up where others left off

Our team was invited to participate in this project after the homeowners lost confidence in the initial contractors working on the project.  We had a partially completed foundation to begin with and had to figure out where to start.

Step 2) Veneering the foundation

We started with adding veneer stone to the foundation that was covered by the room addition.  This allowed us to create a plastic tented room underneath where we could run heaters to keep it above freezing for the masonry work.

Step 3) Building Stairs and Columns

We then built the stairs up out of the sunken patio and the tapered columns around the steel posts that supported the structure.  We had to use string lines to follow the taper and get the layout just right on the columns.  We also worked on the small retaining walls around the patio on warmer days and included some under-cap low voltage ledge lights to help show off the stone work.

Step 4) Pavers and Fire Pit

We finished off the upper patio with pavers and a stone fire pit to conclude this outdoor hardscape project, and then finally put the lawn back together with new sod to have a finished backyard.

the results

timeless stonework and endless possibilities
